Why 3-letter words matter
Three-letter words are the workhorses of board games. They are long enough to carry a high-value tile and short enough to fit almost anywhere. Many of the best plays in Scrabble are three-letter words placed so that each tile also forms a two-letter word with its neighbors, scoring several words at once.
They are also the backbone of hooks: adding one letter to a two-letter word on the board (AX to TAX, or ZA to ZAG) turns a small play into a scoring one. Knowing which three-letter words exist tells you which hooks are legal.

Tile totals before premium squares, with Scrabble and Words With Friends values side by side. Several words swap places between the two games because Words With Friends values letters like H, J and U differently.
