How the solver thinks

Every Wordle clue is a constraint. Green says a letter sits in a specific place. Yellow says a letter is in the word but not where you put it. Gray says a letter is not in the word, or that the word contains fewer copies of it than you guessed. The solver applies every one of those constraints to the five-letter words in the dictionary and shows what is left.

The duplicate-letter rule is where many hand solutions go wrong. If you guess SPEED and the answer is ABIDE, only one of your Es can be marked yellow, and the other will be gray. A careless solver would throw out every word containing E. This one does not: it understands that the gray E only means there are no more Es than the ones already counted.

Reading the ranked list

The first few results are highlighted. They are the candidates whose letters overlap the most with the other remaining words. Playing one of them often leaves you with fewer possibilities next turn than playing an obscure word that happens to fit.

When you are down to two or three wordsIt can be better to guess a word that splits the remaining candidates than to gamble on one of them. If the list shows BATCH, CATCH, HATCH, LATCH, MATCH and PATCH, a guess like PLUMB that tests several first letters will beat guessing each one in turn.

Hard mode and tricky patterns

Pattern families such as _ATCH, _IGHT and _OUND are the usual reason for losing a streak. Once you know the ending, the number of words that fit is large and Wordle gives you only six guesses. Use the solver early in those cases to see how many candidates remain, and spend a guess to eliminate several at once.

An honest note on accuracy

This tool filters correctly based on your clues, but the dictionary is not Wordle's. If your answer is missing, double-check that you set the tile colors correctly, then remember that the game may accept a word this list lacks. Frequently asked questions

How do I use the Wordle solver?

Type each guess into the board. Then tap each tile to set its color to match what Wordle showed: gray for absent, yellow for the wrong position, green for the correct position. Press Show possible words and the list narrows to words that fit every clue.

Does it spoil today's answer?

It never looks up the daily answer. It only filters the dictionary by your clues, so it cannot reveal anything you have not already earned through your guesses.

Why does it show words Wordle would not accept?

Wordle uses its own curated lists: a short list of answers and a longer list of accepted guesses. We use the broader ENABLE dictionary, so some results are obscure words Wordle would never choose as an answer. The top of the list is ranked to favor common letters.

How are the results ranked?

Each candidate gets a score based on how many other candidate words share its letters. A word that uses very common letters is more likely to rule out a lot of alternatives, so it appears first. It is a heuristic, not a guarantee.

How does it handle repeated letters?

Correctly, in the way Wordle does. If you guess a word with two Es and Wordle colors one yellow and one gray, the solver knows the answer has exactly one E.

What is a good first word?

Words with common, varied letters work well. Popular choices include SLATE, CRANE, ADIEU and AROSE. Our Wordle strategy guide explains the reasoning.
