This page is the map to every list on the site. Each one has a distinct purpose, so you can pick the one that fits the question you have, rather than scanning a huge dictionary. All of them search the same 172,830 word dictionary, so their counts and answers agree with each other and with the tools.

By length

Length lists are the foundation of word games, because the board and the rack both limit how long a word can be. Start short: the 2 letter words (103) are the most valuable vocabulary in Scrabble because they let you play in tight spaces. Then the 3 letter words (972) and 4 letter words (3,903) give you the hooks and extensions that turn small plays into scoring ones. The 5 letter words (8,636) are the Wordle length. The 6 letter words (15,232), 7 letter words (23,109) and 8 letter words (28,420) are where bingos live.

By tricky letter

The high-value tiles are the hardest to place, and each has its own list. Words with Q (2,528) includes every Q word without a U. Words with Z (7,029), words with X (4,594) and words with J (2,463) rank the best plays by length. Each page lists the short words in full, because short words are the ones that fit.

By word shape

Endings and beginnings are how you build words from a rack. The words ending in hub counts the endings players use most, and the words ending in ING page covers the biggest one in depth. The words starting with hub does the same for prefixes such as UN, RE and DIS.

Unusual groups

Some lists exist because they are rare, and rare means useful in a pinch. Words without vowels (121) rescues a rack of consonants. Words with all five vowels (2,462) is the reverse. Palindrome words (103) read the same backward.

Tools that use these lists

If you have letters in hand rather than a category in mind, use a tool: the Word Unscrambler, the Anagram Solver, the Scrabble Word Finder or the Words in Words Finder. For a pattern with gaps, use the Crossword Solver, and for a filter by start or end, the Word Finder.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the words come from?

Every list is generated from the ENABLE dictionary, a public-domain word list, plus a small documented supplement of newer official words such as QI, ZA and OK. The total is 172,830 words. See our editorial standards.

Are these lists the same as the official Scrabble dictionary?

They are close but not identical. North American tournaments use the NASPA Word List and the rest of the world uses Collins Scrabble Words, and neither is free to redistribute. Treat our lists as a study aid and check unusual words against the official list for tournament play.

Which list should I learn first?

The two-letter words. They are the smallest list, the most useful in play, and the easiest to memorize. After that, learn the Q words without U, then the three-letter words that use J, Q, X and Z.

How often are the lists updated?

The lists are rebuilt whenever we change the dictionary or add a page, and every page shows the date its content last changed. The What's new page logs each update.

Can I download a list?

Not as a file, but every word is on the page and the lists are plain text, so you can copy them. The tools search the same dictionary and work in your browser.
