A standard English Scrabble set has 100 tiles: 98 letters and 2 blanks. Words With Friends has 104. Both games give each player seven tiles at a time.

Why the values are what they are

Letter values reflect how hard each letter is to use. Common letters that fit into many words, like E, A, I, O, N, R, T, L, S and U, are worth 1 point. Letters that appear in fewer words score more. That is why Q and Z, which appear in relatively few English words, are worth 10.

Words With Friends adjusted several values. H drops from 4 to 3 and Y from 4 to 3, while L, N and U rise from 1 to 2, and B, C, M and P rise from 3 to 4. The J rises from 8 to 10. The result is a game where common letters are worth a little more on average.

Using the counts

  • Tracking tiles. Knowing there are only four S tiles and two blanks in Scrabble tells you how likely you are to draw one, and when they are all gone.
  • Vowel supply. Scrabble has 42 vowel tiles (A, E, I, O, U) out of 100. If many vowels have already been played, keep the ones you have.
  • Endgame counting. When the bag is empty, subtract the board and your rack from the totals above to know your opponent's exact tiles.
