How to play
Each day you get a set of scrambled tiles. They are the letters of one everyday English word of five, six or seven letters, shuffled into the wrong order. Your job is to put them back in the right order in six guesses or fewer.
- Build a guess. Tap the tiles in the order you want them, or type the letters on a keyboard. Tap a letter in your guess to take it back out, or press Backspace. Your guess does not have to be a real word, so you can use a guess to test where a letter goes.
- Submit it. Press Submit guess or the Enter key. Each letter is marked with a check mark and a green tile if it is in the right place, or a double arrow and a yellow tile if it belongs in the word but sits in the wrong place.
- Use the clues. Keep the green letters where they are, move the yellow ones, and try again. Because every tile belongs to the answer, you will not see a gray tile. The feedback tells you about position, not about whether a letter is in the word.
- Finish and share. When you solve the word, or use up your six guesses, you see the answer, your points and a share button that copies a grid of colored squares you can paste anywhere.
Points, hints and streaks
A solved puzzle is worth 7 minus the guesses you used, so solving on the first guess scores 6 and solving on the sixth scores 1. The hint button locks one correct letter into its place and takes one point from your score. You can take 2 hints per puzzle, and a solved puzzle is always worth at least one point.
Your streak counts the days in a row that you solved the puzzle. Miss a day or fail a puzzle and the streak returns to zero, while your best streak and your win rate stay on the board. The optional timer starts when you place your first tile and stops when the puzzle ends. It is off by default and is never part of your shared result.
How the daily word is chosen
The game has a fixed list of 954 words: 299 with five letters, 294 with six and 361 with seven. They are ordinary words that most adults know. We picked them by hand rather than taking them from the dictionary at random, because the full 172,830 word dictionary is full of words that are legal in Scrabble but unfair in a daily puzzle.
Every word on the list also passes a fairness check when the site is built: its letters must not spell any other word in our dictionary. That means the tiles have exactly one answer. You will never lose to a word like SILENT when the puzzle wanted LISTEN. If you would like to understand how often different words share their letters, our Scrambled Word Solver page counts it for each length.
The day's word depends only on the calendar date. The date is turned into a day number, the day number picks a position in the list, and a separate step shuffles the tiles using the same number, so the tiles also look the same for everyone. The list is walked in a scattered order, so five, six and seven letter words mix through the month and no word repeats until all 954 have been used.
Tips for unscrambling
Start by shuffling the tiles to see new neighbors. Look for endings such as ED, ER, LY and S, then for common pairs like TH, ST, CH and ER. Build the consonants first and let the vowels fill the gaps. Our guide, Daily word puzzle tips, walks through each step with counts from the word list, including how to read the feedback and when a hint is worth a point.

Your data and privacy
The game runs entirely in your browser. Your guesses, stats and streak are saved in your browser's local storage so they are there when you come back, and they never leave your device. If storage is blocked, the game still works for the current visit. You can read how the rest of the site treats data in the privacy policy.
This is a word-puzzle game in the style of the daily guessing games many people enjoy. It is independent and is not affiliated with any other game. Its answers come from our own list of everyday words, and the dictionary behind the site is described on the editorial standards page.
Frequently asked questions
How often does the puzzle change?
A new word is chosen every day at midnight in your own time zone. Everyone who plays on the same calendar date gets the same word, so you can compare results with friends. Because the date follows your local clock, someone in a time zone ahead of you may reach tomorrow's puzzle first.
How is the daily word chosen?
It is picked from a fixed list of 954 everyday words of five, six and seven letters, using only the date. There is no server and no randomness at play time, so the word for any date is always the same, and no word repeats until the whole list has been used, which takes 954 days.
How do hints and points work?
You can use up to 2 hints. Each one locks a correct letter into its place and costs one point. You score 7 minus the number of guesses you used minus the hints you took, never less than 1, so a first-guess win with no hints is worth 6 points.
Where are my stats and streak saved?
In your browser's local storage on your own device. Nothing is sent to our servers. If you clear site data, switch browsers or use a private window, the stats start fresh. If your browser blocks storage, the game still works for the day but cannot remember you tomorrow.
What does the Share button copy?
It copies the puzzle number, the number of guesses, and a grid of green and yellow squares showing how each guess went, followed by a link to this page. It never includes the answer, your letters or any personal information.
